The Final

Joda Reid*

Ian Brown

Those of you who follow my site closely, will have read that I wrote that the winner of this year's
championship would win by 21 v 20 and that I went for Joda to win. Well that's exactly what happened when Joda Reid took on Ian Brown in the final of the club championship.

Joda had to fight very hard for this one, as at the 18th end he was losing by 20 v 11 and it looked as if it would not be long before Ian recorded the final shot required to win.

To reach the final Joda had beaten Andy McCabe, Michael Stevenson, Russell Clark, John Ellis and Jim Crawford and had already won the President's singles this year so this game was for the 'Double'. Ian Brown saw off the efforts of Jim Cameron, Archie Keenan, Sanny Ballentyne and John McMonagle and was determined to claim his second championship title at Gourock Park, his first being away back in 1990.

I

The bowling at this stage of the game was simply brilliant, both players were highly entertaining the crowd, as was the marker, John Kane, who raised a few laughs from all watching (and playing) when every time he was asked "How far is that bowl away from the jack", the reply always seemed to be "Six Inches"   Those of you that were there will understand what I mean!

The next few ends saw both players taking shotsand by the time we had reached the 15th end Ian was still in front by 13 shots to 11. He then further increased his lead with an excellent treble to lead by 16 v 11 and over the next two ends he took a double and a single to reach the twenty point mark.

The last end was simply breathtaking! Ian went first and delivered a bowl about 2 inches from the jack. Joda's couldnt match this with either of his first two deliveries, but his third was a fantastic bowl that slowly glided to rest next to Ian's bowl, but more importantly, just slightly closer, and therefore putting the pressure on Ian as he set up to deliver his last bowl of the game.

Ian decided to use weight and was bang on target. He split the head open and once again he lay game, but as the jack was now lying in open ground, he was not safe yet. With about a yard to play with, Joda delivered his last of the game, a real pressure shot, but at the same time, a brilliant chance to become Champion for the third time.

Joda took his time, and chose the hand to take and sent the bowl on its way and once it had stopped, it beat Ian's nearest and bring loud applause from the spectators, who had just witnessed not only a great comeback, but a fantastic display of bowling at its best.

I joined the game at the sixth end and the score was 5 shots to 3 in Joda's favour. Ian took the next end with a single and also at the eighth to level the tie. Ian then got himself in front with a double at the ninth end only to see Joda hit back with a treble at the tenth end.

The next end saw Ian score 3 to get back in front by 10 shots to 8, although he missed a great chance to record a full house, with his last delivery of the end pulling up short after hitting one of Joda's bowls that lay a yard short.

End 12 belonged to Ian too. His first two bowls of the end were poor, but his 3rd was an excellent bowl that nestled its way in between two of Joda's that were just next to the jack to gain the shot and then repeated this shot with his last to gain two shots.
At this point I am quite sure everyone watching would have thought it would not be long before Ian got his last shot required to win the title, but Joda was not for giving up. He was playing out of his skin and fought his way back. At least three times, Ian was lying game after his last bowl had been played, only to see Joda pull out all the stops and slowly eat away at the lead. Joda scored singles in ends 19 and 20, a double at the next, a treble, and another double to make things all square at twenty shots.
